Of Dreams and Colours – Episode 8

“Yes. Of course, I am your father. Why would you even ask such a question?”
“We don’t look alike.”
“Nifemi, not all daughters look like their fathers. You are the perfect replica of your mother. Would you have preferred to look like me, a man who is ugly, to begin with?”
She laughed “No, bami.” She knew the market woman was lying. Of course, bami is her father.

Nifemi continued to improve greatly on her handwriting with the help of her teacher but she wasn’t yet at par with the handwriting skills of her mates. She was promoted to the next class however because of her efforts. Things remained normal for a long while but her friendship with Nike and Tolani died. They each time they see her, they run away.

Nifemi and Olumide became closer than before and even seemed more like twins than friends despite the class difference that happened due to her having dysgraphia. They still went to school together although they separate when Nifemi has to take the path to the primary school and Olumide takes the path leading to the secondary school.

One night, while bami thought she was asleep he received a visitor. Although she couldn’t see them she could hear their conversation.
“You have to move, Nifemi’s biological father Ade wants his child back. His wife is unable to have a child.”
“I am tired of running! Did he acknowledge Abike’s pregnancy? The child has a problem with her hands and the solution is here, right here. Nifemi is my daughter in every way that counts, so she will remain where she is.”
“Don’t act foolishly! They know she is here. The spy Ade’s family sent is the one spreading the rumours so that when the time comes, they can take her without little effort. In gratitude of how you have helped me in the past, I will help you run away tomorrow. Pack your things and meet me under the mango tree near the stream.” He stood up to leave and stopped at the door. “I trust you will make the right decision, I will be waiting.”
